For this 24-25 school year, the Book & Brews Coffee shop in the library has gathered a group of book-loving students and created a book club called The Book Nook. This new addition to the school’s clubs is a great way for students to expand their knowledge about reading books and analyzing their learning. The KHS Library Book Club will be primarily an in-school club. Still, as discussed and want to meet outside of school hours, the club will come together as a whole and decide the appropriate times and accommodate everyone’s schedules. The inspiration for The Book Nook came about when our librarians noticed that the students who came into the library and had a true passion for reading had no place to showcase their knowledge with their peers.
“The desire to start a book club has been in the works for about three years,” said Secondary Media Technology Specialist & Librarian AnnaLeigh Herrin. “I wanted it to be led by a passionate and eager student about taking ownership and inspiring a love for reading with their peers. This year, we met the student who would be perfect for this role. Not only was she passionate about reading, but she was enthusiastic about leading the club and taking full ownership of it. Ms. (Victoria) Torres & I are beyond excited to support this student-driven initiative and create a space where students can share their love of reading and find connection in a safe space. Overall this is just another way to point back to the overall vision of the library being the heart of the school. How can we continuously guide and inspire our students to feel a sense of belonging and inclusivity when they walk into this space? A student-led book club is a perfect way to point back to this overarching goal.”
The Book Nook is a student-led organization and joining will mean you will have complete control of how you want the atmosphere to be so it’s more enjoyable for you and your peers.
“Many are scared to join a club because they don’t want to deal with the additional cost of things in high school,” Librarian Victoria Torres said. “If you want to join The Book Nook, you do not have to worry about expensive dues. When you join the book club you become a part of their amazing family and they will help with anything you need. Paying monetary dues is a no, at least not to join. Although we have asked on our Book Club Google Form if they can purchase their book or if they need help purchasing their book or if they need help purchasing or even purchasing the book they will read all together. Our only dues at this moment is that they are committed to their fellow Book Club members and reading their required chapters every week.”
The Book Club has a President and Vice-President who are here to make your experience one you will never forget. They are junior Hayli Edwards as President and junior Sarah Wady as Vice President. Being overwhelmed about joining something new is understandable but putting yourself out there will do wonders for yourself.
“This is a safe space, you don’t have to feel pressured to speak every time if you don’t want to, you can read at your own pace (there is no rush) and what is said in a book club, stays in book club!” said junior and President Hayil Edwards.
The Book Nook will meet on Monday mornings at 7:15 AM – 7:45 AM. Please note that as the Book Club is starting its first book, the club will not be accepting new members at this time*
