TMEA’s New All-State Band Member

TMEAs+New+All-State+Band+Member

Bryan Reyes is a Junior in high school and also a member of the TMEA All-State Band.

Reyes has been in band for six years. He plays tenor and baritone saxophone. He’s very passionate about music and his instruments because he likes playing and strives to be successful in music. But with success comes challenges. Reyes says the biggest challenge he has faced so far in his musical career has been overcoming nervousness in competitions. His advice for other musicians is to have confidence in yourself. Prioritize quality over quantity in practice. Get taught by a private teacher. Be dedicated enough to practice daily, but not so much that you get burnt out. Reyes is involved in another band as well. The ETSB (East Texas Symphonic Band) The ETSB is made up of approximately 70 volunteer musicians from the East Texas Area. This group consists of adults, many of whom are band directors from area high schools, as well as high school and college students. Reyes’s biggest influence is his private teacher Mr. Larry Edge, because he made Reyes the musician he is today and has been with him ever since. Reyes is most excited about performing with the band and traveling to San Antonio because he will start a new chapter in music and hopefully have a successful career in music.

The Texas All-State audition process is sponsored by TMEA (Texas Music Education Association) to encourage educators to assist their students in this growth and to recognize students’ commitment to their musical knowledge and skill. More than 70,000 high school students audition in their TMEA Region starting in the autumn. People play specific pieces of music for a panel of judges who assign scores to each instrument or vocal section. A chosen cohort of musicians proceeds to engage in competition with musicians from other TMEA Area Regions. The greatest accolade a Texas music student may obtain is All-State. More than 70,000 students from all around the state compete for the opportunity to be chosen as one of eighteen ensembles supported by the Band, Orchestra, and Vocal Divisions, and 1,830 students are chosen in this way.

Reyes will be in San Antonio from Feb 7-10 and will be performing in the Lila Cockrell Theatre in the San Antonio Convention Center on February 10th at 9:40am.
