If you are anywhere on social media right now, you might have heard of several wildfires that have been harming California since January 7th. These are currently known as the Greater Los Angeles Wildfires or as seen on social media the L.A Fires. Though there has not been a discovery as to what has caused these specific fires. Spectators believe global warming has helped increase the severity of wildfires and caused them to be more difficult to distinguish.
“The fires have engulfed a big part of California and reached Hollywood,” sophomore Gabriel Mathis said.
The fires have spread through 57,635 acres of land, and 319 wildfires are currently burning in California. There have already been 48,336 emergency responses, and the number is continuing to rise.
“Very devastating. Many homes were completely lost. I think the death toll is in the twenties now,” psychology teacher Tom Rhoads said.
According to USA Today, first responders have still not been able to confirm what may have initially started the fires, however, studies are saying that climate change has been having its effect on making the fires harder to distinguish. Although this is not the full reason for the fires, we can understand how it does not help make thing any easier.
“To spread more awareness of this issue we should make more points of caution and awareness along with fire safety and prevention,” sophomore Lilah Abbott said.
Though we may not be there in person, there are ways we can help the people of California, we can donate any money were able for those in hospitals, losing heir homes, the first responders risking their lives. It doesn’t matter how much whether it is $100 or simply $1, every penny helps.
“I would say that while I cannot put myself in their shoes, I can only imagine what they are going through. At this point, words are pretty much empty, they need a helping hand,” Rhoads said.
