Prom is one of the most anticipated events in high school. There is lots of effort and planning behind the scenes to make this night memorable. From choosing the perfect theme to coordinating decorations, the Prom Committee works hard to create an unforgettable experience for students.
To raise money for this prom they hosted a fundraiser where they sold poinsettias. Selling a total of 631 poinsettias, the committee raised $3297.50, almost double the amount they did last year.
“This year our Prom Committee was amazing and doubled the amount of money that we raised and the amount that we have sold in the past,” English teacher and Prom Committee sponsor and Shannon Miller said. “It is going to help us tremendously when it comes to financing the prom.”
Being a member of the committee comes with lots of responsibilities.
“We plan out the upcoming prom. This comes with the responsibilities of picking a location, theme, decorations, and funding.” Prom Committee President junior Elle Litchenburg said.
Some may wonder how the Prom Committee goes about choosing a theme. It’s quite the process every time to make sure it’s unique and not repeating themes.
“We begin with showing our committee the themes that have been done within the last 10 years because we do not like to repeat a theme,” Miller said. “Then we tell the committee members that they will need to submit their ideas to us. Their ideas must include decoration ideas, food, party favors, etc. Once they have submitted their ideas we take them and put them together into one Google Slideshow presentation. We have removed the committee members’ names so that everything is anonymous and no one has a bias when it comes to voting. The process takes quite a while to finalize.”
After the whole process of deciding on a theme, the committee works together to roughly plan out the Prom using that theme.
“My favorite thing about sponsoring the Prom Committee is watching the Prom come to life,” Miller said. “It is so magical to watch it develop from an idea to this beautiful prom filled with lights, table decorations, etc.”
The prom theme this year is masquerade. Prom is April 19 at La Vista Ranch in Longview. Don’t forget that only upperclassmen can attend, underclassmen have to go with an upperclassman date in order to attend.
