BTS becomes first K-pop group to get #1 on Billboard Hot 100
BTS just achieved the number one spot on Billboard Hot 100 becoming the first ever K-pop group to make it on the list. Their song “Dynamite,” was released on August 21 and within 24 hours the music video had received over 100 million views on Youtube, breaking BLACKPINK’s “How You Like That” record of receiving 86.3 million views in 24 hours. The song was the group’s first single to be sung fully in English. The boys also beat Adele’s 2015 record, by being the fastest song to reach the top of ITunes charts in most countries, in only 24 hours.
As of September 8th, “Dynamite” has been at the #1 spot for 2 weeks and the music video has passed 300 million views. The boys posted on Twitter a video of them jumping around and screaming with the caption ”This is just…”. The tweet has almost 2.4 million likes in just 24 hours.
BTS fans are trying to beat another record, which is hitting a billion views on the music video within 80 days. At this rate this is something that can be achieved. They performed “Dynamite” for the first time at the 2020 VMA’s. The video has over 30 million views on Youtube, and it’s one of the most talked about performances from the award show.
This is a major achievement for all of K-pop. Despite their online success, K-pop has failed to be recognized by western culture for many years. Now that BTS has made it to the top of the charts I believe that K-pop will start getting the recognition it deserves.
