Movie Review: The New Mutants

The Kilgore Four Star Cinema displays The New Mutants movie poster.

Marvel’s The New Mutants released in theaters on August 28 after facing many delays from its original April 2018 release date. The film hasn’t fared extremely well in the box office, but that’s to be expected in the midst of a pandemic. After two weeks the film has garnered around $20 million, but the original budget is estimated to be around $67 million.

In my opinion, The New Mutants was an entertaining but not extremely memorable movie. I didn’t leave the movie theater feeling much of anything, but I wasn’t disappointed either. I enjoyed the movie, but I can’t see myself ever watching it again.

The film was directed by Josh Boone and stars Maisie Williams, Anya Taylor-Joy, Charlie Heaton, Alice Braga, Blu Hunt, and Henry Zaga. The movie centers around five young mutants in a secret facility. Throughout the movie each mutant’s powers are revealed, and the audience also discovers that they’re all nursing a superpower as a symptom of some awful secret in their past.

One of the major issues the mutants face is questioning why they’re in the secret facility in the first place. The woman in charge of the facility refuses to explain why they’re truly there, and this becomes a major issue that leads to the battle in the third act. The end leaves the viewers satisfied but also wanting more.

This film was Marvel’s attempt at a “horror” film, but the graphics weren’t frightening and it failed to excite as much as a typical superhero movie. I feel as if the movie would’ve been better if they could’ve focused on being more of a horror film. However, Boone also directed the 2014 movie The Fault in Our Stars, so he knows how to write for the young adult audience. I enjoyed this movie as a 17 year old, but I’m sure the older audiences might not be as entertained by it.

Critics are quite literally tearing this film apart, but I genuinely enjoyed it. This was the first movie I’d seen in theaters since March, so maybe that was part of why I enjoyed it so much. If you feel comfortable enough going to a movie theater during this time, I recommend going to see The New Mutants.
