Where the magic happens

UIL One Act is starting back up again for the advanced theater production class and they are kicking off the new year with tryouts which began Thurs., Jan 11 and ended Friday, Jan 12. Results will be posted by Thursday, Jan 18.

“The play is called Still Stands the House by Gwen Ringwood,” theater teacher Sally Perkins said. “It’s a thriller set in the 1930’s in Canada, and the plot is about a family home and the debate of whether to sell it or keep it in the family. One of the characters begins acting psychotic and delusional in her attempts to find a way to keep her home.”

Still Stands the House isn’t like any other play with a happy ending that would leave resonance and satisfaction behind.

“I like it because it has a twist, and I feel like it isn’t your typical feel good story,” Perkins said.

Some students who participated in last year’s competition are auditioning once again this year.

“These auditions bring back memories from last year’s One Act Play,” senior Nicolas Hoskins said. “I am very intrigued by this year’s play and hope it goes well.”

Seniors taking part in the class have already realized that this could be the last play of their high school career.

“Having auditions for the One Act Play has a more sad type of vibe for me,” senior Alyssa Vanhoose said, “realizing this is the last year I will be around such amazing people.”

Returning actors are more than excited to jump back into acting after performing Scrooge! The Musical in December.

“I love the style of the play,” junior Brandon Fugler said. “If there was a scale of 1 to 10 on how excited I am for it, it’d be a 12. I’m used to auditioning, but after reading the scene I was to perform, I was nervous. I immediately fell in love with the character Bruce when I read the script.”

The entire theater class plus a few extras are all ready and anxious to receive the cast list.

“These auditions have been my favorite so far,” senior Olivia Lemaire said. “The energy from everyone is amazing, and the play itself is awesome.”

Practices will begin on the 23rd, leading up to two UIL clinics and a UIL competition, plus a few last performances at the high school when UIL season ends.

“I’m excited for this One Act season to start and to see the talent that is brought to the stage,” Perkins said.
