Unity is about coming together as a whole. Here at KHS, that is our new organization’s entire goal. The Unity Committee is dedicated to making sure school is a safe space for everyone.

“The Unity Committee is a group of students who have the goal of bringing unity and community to Kilgore High School and to help create a safe space for all students,” Carl Mohn, Unity committee leader, said. “The committee wants to promote peace, kindness, and acceptance of everyone, no matter who they are or what they believe.¨

Although the organization has just started, they are already working on three projects. The details of these projects are expected to be coming soon.

“We have plans for projects that will take place over the course of the year which will help build unity among our student body,” Mohn said.

With 20 members in this organization, this shows that students are wanting something like this and are eager to work towards a common goal of unity.

“This committee proves there are students who are concerned with promoting kindness. This is important because it is so easy for us to be selfish and only concerned with what we want. By looking beyond ourselves, we are able to see the value of everyone. This leads to fuller and richer lives,” Mohn says.

This idea came from the “No Place for Hate.’’ It’s  an initiative sponsored by the Anti-Defamation league. The point is to promote kindness and unity among the student body.

“We want people to try to understand everyone’s point of view. We all have unique perspectives. When we only focus on ourselves, we miss the beauty present in everyone else. We need to learn to see the world from other people’s point of view,” Mohn says.

This organization proves that we are all in this together. We should all work together to make it the best possible place for everyone.

“Unity and Equality are two different concepts. Equality suggests that everyone has (or should have) equal rights and respect from everyone else. Unity means that we are all in this together, so we should work for the good of everyone. When we all work together, there is no problem we can’t overcome,” Mohn says.
